Envelope Guy At The Wedding
Other great New York area based comedians, like Tony Dabas and Goomba Johnny have discussed “The envelope” before. It’s a great debate. Do you give the same wedding gift at every wedding? Is the wedding gift the “floating $100 bill” or are you “paying your plate”?
Almost 20 years ago, I created the “I Hate Weddings.com Gift Calculator” which was a detailed formula to figure out how much money to give as a wedding gift.
I have always maintained that without bitterness, if the Bride and Groom spend more money at a wedding and make more of an effort for you to have a good time on their occasion you should give a bigger gift.
At my friend Mike R’s wedding, I wound up seated at the freak table. I opened the envelope of cash and took $50 bucks out. I put the envelope into the gift box with the little tear. I was asked how much money I gave at the wedding because the envelope looked damage. I told him bluntly “you put me at the freak table with mismatched and angry coworkers.”
If you use the IHateWeddings.com Gift Calculator . . . you will leave your hosts wondering what they did right . . . what they did wrong.
Good weddings should be rewarded. Bad weddings shouldn’t be punished but nor should they be rewarded.
Wedding Gift Calculator

The biggest chore for a wedding guest is to decide how much money to put in the envelope. Not all weddings are equal. Therefore every couple getting married does not deserve the same gift. When giving a gift for a wedding there are many factors you should consider so that you don’t look cheap and more importantly so that you don’t give too much.
When you give cash is to remember to give it at the end of the reception. This gives you a chance to have fun and look at how much work the bride and groom put into the event. It also gives you a chance to consider how much work YOU put into the event. Remember, its not the gift, it’s the thought that counts. If you put a lot of thought into a wedding . . . you should give money.
Tom Kelly’s IHateWeddings.com Gift Calculator has been featured on television, Howard Stern, Elvis Duran and the Morning Show and has gone viral every wedding season since 2005!

People Watching

I saw this Seinfeld meme and . . . it captured the spirit of going to a wedding almost every weekend. If you can’t go to support your loved ones on the most special day of their life . . . go to stand in the corner and mock their most cherished loved ones and relatives.
The Groom’s reaper

My friend is planning a wedding. He is a man marrying a man. The men are having trouble delivering bad news to friends and family who are too involved in their wedding and giving unwanted opinions.
I’ve decided they need a “buffer” to deliver bad news. “The Grooms’ Reaper” who would be in charge of delivering unwanted bad news to family and friends.
What bad news would you want your “Groom’s Reaper” to deliver for you and your bride?

This comes from our reader Amanda who’s friend got married on July 3rd, a Monday! And a counterpoint from someone named Jeani.
Point:
I have friends who got married on July 3 (a Monday) because they stupidly and naively thought that everybody would have a 4-day weekend, what with July 4 being on a Tuesday. I was really upset because I had to work that day and I couldn’t go. I have held a lot of different jobs, and I have NEVER worked anywhere that gives people off the day before or after July 4. What the hell were these people thinking? You’re right: holiday weddings can backfire, depending on the holiday.
Counter Point:
Stand By wedding guest

We’ve all heard of A list wedding guests . . . the friends and family you definitely have to invite to a wedding. Then you have B list wedding guests, the friends you love and they barely made the cut.
Then you have the C list wedding guests. That would be coworkers and people who get invited very last minute. They wind up at the “freak table.”
Now we all know there is nothing sadder than having empty seats at your wedding. You need your guests who RSVP yes to actually show up.
How do you prevent unsightly empty seats?
